Embodied Storytelling

Embodied Storytelling / Theater /

Storytelling has been a long history. Theater, projecting on a dark space, has been an inheritence of platon's theory of idea. We had been long dreaming of seeing our dreams be animated. Computation enables us to communicate without visualizing them. However, context gets lost and stories get alineated.
Embodied storytelling helps to balance abstraction and objects to be utilized as props in a theater.
Objects help sharing of the stories.

Sharing stories and telling stories is a primal act of communication. However, often times, it is hard to continue or play stories by oneself.

Michael Mateas created Facade, an ai communication platform. What happens if we adapt the facade engine to toys? Would it make an interactive theater/ performance show to be played through children?
First of all, this would free parents from playing with their children. Second, this would open up improvised performance / interactive storytelling.

How can craft or making be coupled with storytelling?

What can our bodily activities tell us about HCI and tangible computing?
1. Performance as Meaning Making
2. Performance as Understanding
3. Performance as Re-inventing / Personalizing
4. Performance as

Embodied Storytelling : How can objects, toys be used to assist with storytelling, story creation?
Collaborative storytelling?

Research questions: would the digital coupling of toys enhance sharing of storytelling, and support creativity? Are children more encouraged?

Does a new form of storytelling, curiocity, play easy to learn? Would the wonder, and emotional response increase learning?

How can objects hold stories? What value does these objects hold?
Does kid like these objects over other objects?

Kids play of storytelling resemble theater / with first person and third person perspective. Would mediatized performance, storytelling be increasing ... ?

Embodied storytelling for what?

Embodied space : what is our relationship with space?

Objects

Any object holds emotional ,social, or functional values. Objects can be tools to be used and also media to see through another world.
There are several usages of objects . Analyzing these functions gives us insight on how to use objects in computing and designing IOT.

1. Represent
1.1 Mood : Affective & Expressive computing This can be used for therapy, or share of social communication, or entertainment.
1.2. Fact / State : A Flag to represent

2. Sense ing media : Objects can be used to sense and assist with cognition / learning

3.  Share cultural assumption: Cultural artifact As a social probe   : Objects hold culture and assumptions. This can be helpful or be used for creating a common ground for communication.

4. Recording, and Manifesting : Objects can be a marking, a result or a thing crafted during a certain time, manifesting the time and activity of ourselves.

5. Manipulation & Creation Tool : Objects can be used to manipulate and create something else , either a craft object or an artwork.

IOT enables the hardware and software to be merged and objects to communicate through clouds. Objects can be active agents, not a tool any more.

I am wondering whether objects can be both the tool and the media. If that happens, then objects are reborn as cognitive synesthetic media for creativity use.

Examples would be cell phones, clay, light beam, etc.
Critical tools.

Questions: Can object be tools to think ? (constructivist learning / critical making / critical interaction ) Can objects be used to cognition? Data visualization?
How does Phenomenology affect the usage of objects? Does phenomenology view objects as tools? What other theory view objects as media?

Result: Wearable ?? IOT ?? Learning Tangibles?

I want to create a relationship of objects that helps us create, learn, or communicate. Objects can represent our mood, cognition, and process. Objects can be extension of ourselves. We can see through and sense through other objects, and represent ourselves and our state of activity or mind through objects.

Everyday interaction as performance with objects / /?

Context: in a context of designing social objects // ?
AI with object --> Social robots // ?
Performance of objects // ?
Objects gaze back at us  ?

Our relationship with objects :
Utilizing objects for creative tool / communication / learning  / expressive object

The relationship of human and the objects // how digital media can enhance /affects it.

Objects can be our friends through AI / Interactive Technology // ? Extension of our body and mind // ? (Tools)

How objects can trigger action // ?  --> construct social change ?

1.  How can our Everyday interaction become augmented as performance (through digitla technology)?
Weaving made out of our footsteps // ?
What is the differnce btw everyday lives and performance ?
How can we transform everyday interaction as performance ?
How can objects trigger action and maybe extend it to construct social or personal change?
Can interaction become a critical action ?
Social change through interaction with objects // ?

2 . What can our bodily practices (Affordances) inspire interaction design?  // Can affordances be designed inspired through bodily practices?
(in performance, social interaction, activity, craft )

3. How can object assist with our cognition ? and helps us think? ready in hand // affordances //
  Objects used for learning / /play ?

4. How can objects hold story and culture ?

5.  Is Interaction with Autonomous objects sociable?  Does it help creativity ?
Creativity support tool :
Digital / mediatized /Creation / Performance / Shadow play // mediatized /Augmented theater / / ? children's puppetry / / ?  (storymaking tool)
AI / autonomy helps creativity support /

6. Information retrieval and display --> tangible ?
